{"id":3656,"date":"2017-02-16T05:11:59","date_gmt":"2017-02-16T05:11:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/aki\/?p=3656"},"modified":"2017-02-16T05:11:59","modified_gmt":"2017-02-16T05:11:59","slug":"inception-innovation-stockport-nhs-foundation-trust-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/aki\/blog\/inception-innovation-stockport-nhs-foundation-trust-story\/","title":{"rendered":"From Inception to IT Innovation &#8211; The Stockport NHS Foundation Trust Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wow, what a week!\u00a0 I\u2019m feeling very proud, slightly manic and if I\u2019m honest, a little bit emotional.<\/p>\n<p>Just a few weeks ago, I presented an update to the head of nursing, matrons and ward managers in the Medicine Business Group outlining our \u2018Raising AKI Awareness\u2019 campaign progress and specifically, the exciting IT developments.\u00a0 As usual, I ended my presentation with a \u2018What\u2019s Next?\u2019 slide, one of the bullet points was:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Showcase &amp; celebrate our fantastic achievements<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I urged the senior nurses to share the slides with their teams, thank them for their ongoing support and let them know just how much has been achieved in such challenging times. \u00a0None of this would have been possible without their hard work and amazing dedication.<\/p>\n<p>Well, we\u2019ve certainly celebrated this week &#8211; a press release to the local media and our case study featured by \u2018Think Kidneys\u2019.\u00a0 It really has been fantastic to get our success story out there.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, I wasn\u2019t prepared for the level of interest and positive comments generated by showcasing our work hence the range of emotions I\u2019m feeling &#8211; quite overwhelming, best move on\u2026.. \u00a0Another bullet point on my \u2018What\u2019s Next?\u2019 slide:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It\u2019s never \u2018Job Done\u2019 &#8211; Continue to strive to improve quality and patient safety<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I don\u2019t normally get so animated about technology, mainly because I don\u2019t really understand it.\u00a0 Now don\u2019t be fooled, I\u2019m not a complete dinosaur \u2013 \u00a0I proudly possess a CSE in typewriting (Grade 1 \u2013 that\u2019s an \u2018O\u2019 Level, right?), can attach a document to an email with proficiency and I absolutely excel at online shopping! \u00a0It\u2019s hard to face up to one\u2019s weaknesses but is it too shameful to admit that I\u2019ve bowed to peer pressure and recently got myself a smartphone?<\/p>\n<p>Despite my techno shortcomings, even I could appreciate what a tremendous innovation the IT Team had delivered, this IT stuff was magnificent. \u00a0I kept on telling them so but they just shrugged their shoulders as though it was nothing. \u00a0I didn\u2019t get why they weren\u2019t high fiving all round and punching the air, I certainly was!\u00a0 Everyone involved in the IT has been quietly brilliant.\u00a0 At times, I\u2019m sure they were thinking \u2018she\u2019s like a dog with a bone\u2019 &#8211; I prefer the term, tenacity!<\/p>\n<p>Seriously though, this new IT development which auto populates the patients\u2019 electronic records and displays the AKI alert on the plasma screens in the emergency department and ward areas is fantastic (you can read the case study here: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/aki\/case-studies\/introduction-aki-specialist-nurse-raising-aki-awareness-campaign-stockport-nhs-trust\/\">https:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/aki\/case-studies\/introduction-aki-specialist-nurse-raising-aki-awareness-campaign-stockport-nhs-trust\/<\/a>). It will really help improve communication and further raise awareness across the clinical teams. I realise for those of us passionate about improving AKI care, this is pushing an already open door &#8211;\u00a0 we all know that early recognition and timely interventions are absolutely vital to ensure our patients get the best care possible. Our challenge is getting that message across the wider healthcare teams, to our patients and indeed to the general public.<\/p>\n<p>Over the coming weeks, I\u2019ll be \u2018blogging\u2019 (how thoroughly modern) reflecting on the challenges, the highs and the lows that I\u2019ve experienced since starting out in the role of specialist nurse and developing the AKI service at Stockport.\u00a0 Please come along for the ride, I hope it will be interesting, maybe mildly entertaining and you never know, it might actually be useful!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wow, what a week!\u00a0 I\u2019m feeling very proud, slightly manic and if I\u2019m honest, a little bit emotional.
