Yes, because this is a reflective blog so let\u2019s start at the beginning \u2013 March 2016. \u00a0\u00a0Here I am, AKI specialist nurse, I feel a little uncomfortable and it\u2019s not just because of the crisp new uniform but more down to using my job title &#8211; \u00a0I\u2019m not a renal specialist nurse or a specialist anything, this was a new role for me and for the hospital. \u00a0What am I doing? I\u2019m a critical care nurse, have I made a terrible mistake? I had certainly \u2018talked the talk\u2019 at my job interview but now I would be expected to \u2018walk the walk\u2019 and I was definitely experiencing <em>The Imposter Syndrome<\/em> described so well by Hugh Kearns <a href=\"http:\/\/impostersyndrome.com.au\/index.php\/2016\/12\/14\/beginnings-and-transitions\/\">@ithinkwellHugh<\/a> .<\/p>\n<p>How was I going to initiate a Trust wide \u2018Raising AKI Awareness\u2019 campaign when I literally didn\u2019t know anyone?\u00a0 The word \u2018<em>infiltrate\u2019<\/em> comes to mind, not quite in the military sense that I saw Stockport as the enemy, but more how could I gain access to the right groups in order to <a href=\"http:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/dictionary\/english\/influence\">influence<\/a>\u00a0the way that group thinks and behaves?\u00a0 Of course, now I could draw upon my previous experience and involvement in quality improvement and patient safety projects \u2013 my skills really were transferrable!\u00a0 I made a plan, well a list (a very long list) of all the ways I could get my information to the \u2018enemy\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst navigating one\u2019s way around a new organisation initially appeared daunting, I quickly realised that being new did actually have some advantages \u2013 I didn\u2019t know anyone but likewise, nobody knew me.\u00a0\u00a0 I wasn\u2019t hindered or intimidated by any perceived hierarchy because\u2026.. you\u2019ve guessed it, I didn\u2019t know anyone!<\/p>\n<p>I brazenly sent out emails introducing myself (including the requisite terrible photo &#8211; unforgettable) outlining the urgent need to improve AKI care and patient safety.\u00a0 Data, facts and figures all helpfully provided by the \u2018Think Kidneys\u2019 website. \u00a0\u00a0I shamelessly played on my \u2018new to Stockport\u2019 status, requesting help and advice, and I knew existing meetings and forums would be useful to attend and so I boldly invited myself &#8211; this was no time for shrinking violets, I was going into battle, metaphorically speaking.<\/p>\n<p>I spent many hours designing various posters using the Trust templates which all looked very professional and maintained the corporate image. \u00a0However, I was concerned that they all looked the same &#8211; how would staff recognise new information?\u00a0 A quick email to \u2018Think Kidneys\u2019 and permission to use their logo was given and a digital image was provided \u2013 now my posters were unique!<\/p>\n<p>Realising the power of \u2018branding\u2019, the logo was then used on anything and everything AKI related \u2013 PowerPoint presentation slides, information on the Trust intranet, Team Brief, my Trust email signature and so on.\u00a0 I wanted or rather<em> I<\/em> <em>needed<\/em> everyone to recognise the distinctive orange logo of <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3662\" src=\"http:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/aki\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/02\/Think_Kidney_logo_RGB_72dpi-300x109.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"80\" height=\"29\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/aki\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/02\/Think_Kidney_logo_RGB_72dpi-300x109.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/aki\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/02\/Think_Kidney_logo_RGB_72dpi-231x84.jpg 231w, https:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/aki\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2017\/02\/Think_Kidney_logo_RGB_72dpi.jpg 738w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 80px) 100vw, 80px\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0and immediately think\u2026.. <strong><em>\u2018Kidneys\u2019<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>As I visited wards and departments, the staff started to recognise me and exclaimed \u201cOh, you\u2019re the kidney nurse\u201d or \u201cYou\u2019re doing that AKI thing\u201d and curiously, the symptoms of my <em>Imposter Syndrome<\/em> began to improve.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, so the staff didn\u2019t always know my name, that wasn\u2019t important &#8211; but they knew what I was about!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Inception \u2013 Raising AKI Awareness Campaign The second in a series of blogs from Wendy Oakes, AKI Specialist Nurse Part 2?
