It aims to improve cannulation \/ needling of arteriovenous fistulae (AVF) and grafts (AVG). It uses the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/kquip\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/10\/Clinical-Practice-Recommendations-for-Needling-of-Arteriovenous-Fistulae-and-Grafts-for-Haemodialysis.pdf\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5104\">BRS and VASBI Clinical Practice Recommendations for Needling of Arteriovenous Fistulae and Grafts for Haemodialysis<\/a>\u00a0as a basis to define best practice.<br \/>The aim of MAGIC is to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Improve rates of AVF and AVG use through preserving the lifespan of existing AVF and AVG<\/li>\n<li>Improving patient experience of needling, to encourage patients to choose AVF or AVF as their preferred type of vascular access<\/li>\n<li>Promoting future quality improvement into vascular access.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/kquip\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/08\/Driver-Diagram-MAGIC.pdf\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5013\">Magic Drive Diagram shows key elements that will drive this change in units<\/a><br \/>MAGIC has been designed to work at a regional level and regions will be offered the opportunity to become involved in MAGIC through the KQuIP regional days.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/kquip\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/08\/MAGIC-Regional-Project-Structure.pdf\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5014\">The process of MAGIC whithin KQuIP&#8217;s regional struture, is shown in the process diagram<\/a>\u00a0This structure provides a core element to MAGIC, with space for regional specific QI to be incorporated into the structure. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/kquip\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/08\/Objectives.pdf\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5015\">MAGIC has created a set of objectives to shape the project.\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0Again, these objectives provide a core structure to MAGIC but allow addition of regional designed objectives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Leadership<\/strong><br \/>MAGIC takes a collaborative approach, as the leadership of MAGIC within renal units will make it a success locally, regionally and nationally. Individuals will drive MAGIC within their own local area, ith support and advice from experts involved in MAGIC and KQuIP. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/kquip\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2018\/08\/MAGIC-Pledge.pdf\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5016\">We have created a MAGIC pledge to outline the comittment individual units initiate when agreeing to participate in MAGIC<\/a>\u00a0In particular, we are asking participating units to nominate a <strong>needling champion<\/strong> and <strong>vascular access<\/strong><strong> lead<\/strong> to drive MAGIC locally. The pledge specifies who these people should be and what their role will be. Support for these leads will be available through 3-monthly calls \/ webinars and KQuIP regional events.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials<\/strong><br \/>The MAGIC group have developed a number of materials, endorsed by BRS and VASBI, to help units implement best needling practice. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Educational materials<\/strong> including;<br \/>&#8211; Slide sets with lesson plans<br \/>&#8211; ELearning package<br \/>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/kquip\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/11\/Needling-Competency-Document-A-1.pdf\">Competency document<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/patient-awareness-materials\/\"><strong>Awareness materials<\/strong> <\/a>including<br \/>&#8211; Posters<br \/>&#8211; Cards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>The materials used for <\/b><b>MAGIC <\/b><b>were developed using unrestricted grants from:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/kquip\/magic\/attachment\/magic-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5608\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/kquip\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2019\/03\/MAGIC.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1311\" height=\"126\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Further information on these elements will be available soon.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>External resource<\/strong><\/h5>\n<h6><em><strong>Life Threatening Bleed in haemodialysis patients.<\/strong><\/em><\/h6>\n<div>Excellent presentation from James Gilbert on the use of bottle top for Life Threatening Bleeds. Well done to the Bracknell dialysis unit staff who, with their quick actions and prompt use of the bottle top, led to this story going viral on twitter and thus this video to be made\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/webmail.nbt.nhs.uk\/owa\/redir.aspx?C=Vy6tCJ8FcVN662xdAcGBIEKa-FutKqUottmtK3e0nNC1BGq0PRzYCA..&amp;URL=https%3a%2f%2fvimeo.com%2f432362589%3fref%3dtw-share\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/vimeo.com\/432362589?ref=tw-share<\/a><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<p><strong>Measurement<\/strong><br \/>MAGIC has developed a measurement strategy to evaluate whether MAGIC changes practice. We have used Kirkpatrick\u2019s educational evaluation model to structure this with 4 levels of measures:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Level 1 \u2013 was use of the materials enjoyable<\/li>\n<li>Level 2 \u2013 did use of the materials lead to learning<\/li>\n<li>Level 3 \u2013 did use of the materials lead to changes in clinical practice<\/li>\n<li>Level 4 \u2013 did use of the materials lead to changes in clinical outcomes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The clinical outcomes linked with MAGIC will be measured monthly from a sample of haemodialysis patients and recorded using run charts, which will be visible to individual renal unit teams.<\/p>\n<p>These outcomes have been developed in-line with MAGIC\u2019s core objectives.
