UK Renal Registry data demonstrated that home dialysis reduced the risk of acquiring COVID-19 for a vulnerable group.<\/em><\/p>Consultant Nephrologist, UK<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

My unit is doing video clinics and I had my first appointment a couple of weeks ago… it left me feeling less isolated. Did medical insertions of PD catheters increase the resilience of PD services during COVID-19?<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Patients who were receiving dialysis at home had the\nrelative advantage over patients who were receiving unit or satellite based\nhaemodialysis of not needing to attend hospital regularly, meaning they were\nable to shield effectively during the pandemic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

UK Renal Registry data demonstrated that home dialysis\nreduced the risk of acquiring COVID-19 for a vulnerable group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NICE COVID-19 rapid guideline: dialysis service delivery\n[NG160] published in March 2020 stated dialysis service delivery should\ncontinue and maintain current home dialysis provision (home haemodialysis and\nperitoneal dialysis), maintain adequate supplies and staffing support, and\nassess the resilience of care reliant on paid or unpaid carers, family and\nfriends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The guideline also asked services to think about whether it\nwas possible to increase home dialysis provision for new incident patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As in-centre and ward based renal teams were stretched\nhowever, the home therapies workforce in many cases were needed to support\nother areas of dialysis provision, and reorganisation and innovation were\nrequired in order to maintain normal training, education and support for\npatients who chose to dialyse at home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
