I think it allows you to have more control of your own life<\/p>\n<cite>Patient newly trained and started on peritoneal dialysis during COVID-19, UK<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It became clear during the COVID pandemic that for in centre patients on haemodialysis, the risk of acquiring COVID and mortality were both high. UK Renal Registry data demonstrated that home dialysis reduced the risk of acquiring COVID-19 for a vulnerable group.<\/p>\n<cite>Consultant nephrologist, UK<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Personal experiences of dialysis at home during COVID-19<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/kquip\/blog\/starting-peritoneal-dialysis-during-the-covid-19-pandemic-paul-greysons-story-uk\/\">Paul\u2019s experience, peritoneal dialysis (KQuIP)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thinkkidneys.nhs.uk\/kquip\/blog\/johns-story-peritoneal-dialysis-patient-uk\/\">John\u2019s experience, peritoneal dialysis (KQuIP)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kidney.org.uk\/the-dangers-of-every-day-being-the-same-by-william\">William\u2019s experience, home haemodialysis (NKF)<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What did COVID-19 mean for dialysis at home?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People with kidney disease were at greater risk of serious morbidity and mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This may have been due to the need to visit hospitals or dialysis centres on a regular basis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patients who were receiving dialysis at home had the relative advantage over patients who were receiving unit or satellite based haemodialysis of not needing to attend hospital regularly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Patients on home based dialysis treatment were able to shield effectively during the pandemic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nice.org.uk\/guidance\/ng160\/resources\/covid19-rapid-guideline-dialysis-service-delivery-pdf-66141894031045\">NICE COVID-19 rapid guideline: dialysis service delivery [NG160]<\/a> published in March 2020 stated dialysis service delivery should:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Continue and maintain current home dialysis provision (home haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis), and maintain adequate supplies and staffing support. Assess the resilience of care reliant on paid or unpaid carers, family and friends.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Think about whether it is possible to increase home dialysis provision for new incident patients.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Test for COVID-19 in patients, carers and assistants (paid and unpaid) in the community using any form of home dialysis if they develop symptoms.
