I think it allows you to have more control of your\nown life &#8211; having to be in hospital for six hours in a day would drive me\nmad!&nbsp; Doing it at home meant I could\nwatch telly, use my computer \u2013 do what I want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time I didn\u2019t fancy being on the\nmachine overnight as the machines looked really complicated, but now I have got\na bit more confident it might be something that I will try out &#8211; four hours of\nstopping and starting does sometimes gets on your nerves a bit.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How was the experience of going to hospital to have your catheter put in?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>For me it was fine, but for my family it\nwas a bit scary.&nbsp; You hear all these\nstories about people going to hospital, catching COVID and not coming back\nout.&nbsp; It was worrying for them but I knew\nit was just one of those things I had to get done.&nbsp; Everything is set up for your safety in\nhospital \u2013 they take your temperature, make sure you sit two metres apart \u2013 I\nfelt really safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My family and I were able to ask all the\nquestions that we needed to ask.&nbsp; The\nnurses are so knowledgeable \u2013 it\u2019s amazing what they do every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After going in, unfortunately I did catch\nCOVID &#8211; so that did not help, but I don\u2019t know if that was due to my visit to\nhospital or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How was going to the Baxter Education Centre (BEC) to do your PD training?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The education centre was excellent \u2013 after\nbeing locked up for two months it was just a relief to get out the house! They\nlook after you there, have everything that you need, and it\u2019s so well laid out.&nbsp; The people there were really nice &#8211; it was a\npity it wasn\u2019t a warmer, sunnier climate &#8211; that would have made it perfect\novernight stay!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was one other person doing training\nwith us \u2013 they had cut down the usual numbers because of COVID so there were\nonly three of us in the room at one time.&nbsp;\n&nbsp;There is definitely a benefit to\ntraining with other people as you get to talk to each other about your\nexperiences \u2013 you can help each other out, or remind each other when you forget\nto do something.&nbsp; Having someone there\nthat is going through the same thing as you is so helpful.&nbsp; I didn\u2019t have any concerns about COVID while\nI was there \u2013 it\u2019s such a big place with lots of space and we were safe as far\nas I was concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What was the follow up like?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The hospital phoned a few times to check up\non how I was doing, and the Baxter trainers phoned me three or four times as\nwell to make sure I was comfortable doing the treatment on my own, and to make\nsure I had all my medication and deliveries.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The renal team told me if I had any\nproblems at all to go in straight away, and if there is anything I wanted from\nthem, just to let them know &#8211; I have been into hospital for a few appointments\nsince training as I had a few mishaps and they\u2019ve always been excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How has the deliveries of your treatment supplies been?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When the drivers came to deliver\neverything, they left the boxes exactly where I asked them to \u2013 I haven\u2019t had\nany problems with that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The only trouble has been today &#8211; I\ntravelled to Margate this morning, and have discovered that I have brought\neverything I need except for my clips! Now I have to travel to the hospital at\nCanterbury to try and find some.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PD has helped me live my life as normally\nas possible \u2013 except for when you forget what you need!!&nbsp; I think they should do an overnight kit bag\nso you have everything you need in one place if you go away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What advice do you have for anyone making decisions about their kidney treatment at the moment?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In terms of PD I would say you should try\nboth on and off the machine, and be open-minded to see both options.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking to other patients is really useful\n\u2013 you need first-hand information to really understand and help you make these\ndecisions.&nbsp; <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How did you come to choose PD?
