The scheme\nwill help AKCC, Low Clearance Nurses and Living Donor Co-ordinators to support\nblack patients with CKD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>GOLD advocates\nfor Transplant First and early conversations about living donation between\npatients, loved ones and peer phone buddies could see an increase in the number\nof pre-emptive transplants for black patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many services\nprovided by hospitals have been cancelled due to Covid19, one service that has\nbeen affected is the renal transplant educational seminars. These seminars\nprovide valuable information to patients with CKD and their loved ones on renal\nfailure, treatment options, living donation and transplantation.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Data shows that there is a disproportionately\nhigh rate of CKD in the Black community and access to transplantation in\nparticular living donation is low in this population when compared with people\nfrom other backgrounds. We know one of the key reasons is the reluctance of\nblack patients to have the conversation about living donation with family and\nfriends. We understand that just the thought of asking someone to consider\ndonating can be daunting and make patients anxious and fearful. How do they\nstart the conversation? How do they ask loved ones that all-important question\nthat could be life changing for them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The purpose of\nthe scheme is to:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Empower<\/strong>\npatients to have those early conversations about living donation with loved\nones as this could lead to having a transplant first instead of dialysis<\/li><li><strong>Encourage<\/strong>\nloved ones to consider coming forward as a living donor<\/li><li><strong>Educate<\/strong> patients and loved ones on the\npre and post living donation and transplant process<\/li><li><strong>Enhance<\/strong><strong> the qualit<\/strong>y of life for black patients with\nCKD through the sharing of powerful black stories of living kidney donation<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Role of Peer\nPhone Buddies:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phone Buddies are living kidney donors and transplant recipients from across the UK who have lived experience of living kidney donation.
