KQuIP is keen to signpost visitors to the KQuIP Hub where they will find educational resources on the subject of quality improvement that have been produced either locally or nationally for health and social care professionals.

These educational resources are a combination of free to access nationally or for local organisations where they are being delivered in a geographic location. Some sources require you to log in before you can proceed.

Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) – Introduction to quality improvement for patients and public

This eLearning package seeks to support service users who wish to become involved in quality improvement work in healthcare. It has been developed and tested through a series of consultations with HQIP’s own Service User Network group, throughout 2015.

The Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) is an independent organisation led by the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, The Royal College of Nursing and National Voices. They were established in April 2008 to promote quality in healthcare, and in particular to increase the impact that clinical audit has on healthcare quality improvement.

Their vision
HQIP aims to improve health outcomes by enabling those who commission, deliver and receive healthcare to measure and improve our healthcare services.

Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) – How to improve with the model for improvement

The Model for Improvement, developed by a group called Associates in Process Improvement, is simple to understand and apply. But it’s powerful. This course will teach you how to use the Model for Improvement to improve everything from your tennis game to your hospital’s infection rate. You’ll learn the basic steps in any improvement project: setting an aim, selecting measures, developing ideas for changes, and testing changes using Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycles. As you go along, you’ll have the opportunity to use the same methodology to start your own personal improvement project.

Objectives

After completing this course, you will be able to:
1.List the three questions you must ask to apply the Model for Improvement.
2.Identify the key elements of an effective aim statement.
3.Identify three kinds of measures: process measures, outcome measures, and balancing measures.
4.Use change concepts and critical thinking tools to come up with good ideas for changes to test.
5.Test changes on a small scale using the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle.

Improvement Academy – Silver Quality Improvement Training

Silver level training includes a range of in-depth sessions around the practical application of quality improvement methods – from examples of methods, tools and techniques that engage multidisciplinary teams in quality improvement initiatives, to behaviour change – for individuals and teams.

Silver Level for Individuals: this training offers an introduction to Quality Improvement and provides examples of methods, tools and techniques that engage multidisciplinary teams in quality improvement initiatives. Attendance is contingent on completion of the Bronze Level on-line training and all trainees receive a certificate of attendance. Attendees are encouraged to carry out an optional follow-up improvement project with the support of their organisation.

Silver Level for Teams: this new training course has been designed for teams that are ready and keen to work together to improve aspects of their services, but who lack the skills and confidence to get started. The training takes a practical focus and throughout the day teams will be supported to develop their own project. Attendance is contingent on completion of the Bronze Level on-line training and all trainees receive a certificate of attendance. Teams are encouraged to carry out an optional follow-up improvement project with the support of their colleagues.

Improvement Academy – Bronze Quality Improvement Training

The Improvement Academy have developed an e-learning Bronze training programme which includes a broad spectrum of foundation knowledge, from an introduction to the concepts of quality improvement and the Model for Improvement, to more detailed descriptions of some of the tools for improvement and how they can be used. This Bronze training can be used on a ‘stand-alone’ basis, or as entry to more advanced training.

The content and materials for the Bronze on-line modules are based around material originally produced for the ‘1000 Lives Plus Campaign’ by NHS Wales.

A key objective of the training is to help participants understand how and why everyone has a role to play and can contribute to Quality Improvement in their work area.

Sheffield Microsystem Coaching Academy – Introduction to Quality Improvement Two Day Course

This course has now been approved by the Royal College for 10 hours of external non-clinical CPD points.

To compliment the MCA the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals’ Service Improvement team run a regular two day ‘Introduction to Quality Improvement Course’. Dates for upcoming courses are shown below.

The two days are designed to introduce the basics of quality improvement through a mixture of presentation, video and practical exercises, and is aimed at anyone who is interested in quality improvement, as a leader, a potential MCA coach or as part of an improvement team.

What is the Sheffield Microsystem Coaching Academy?

The UK’s first Microsystem Coaching Academy aims to:-

  • Build improvement capability into the workforce
  • To maximise quality and value to patients
  • Help multi-disciplinary front line teams rethink and redesign services

Coaches are trained in the art of team coaching and the science of quality improvement to work with front line teams to help them re-design the services they deliver.

The MCA’s core objective is to develop coaches and work with teams within Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, Sheffield Children’s and Sheffield Health and Social Care Trust and will help organisations beyond Sheffield get started on their own improvement journey.

How the Academy is achieving this aim

The Academy has trained 169 microsystem coaches, across clinical and corporate support areas in cohorts 1 to 7. Using action learning theory, these coaches have helped teams make multiple improvements work in their microsystems. Coaches have been trained from both outside and within STH.

As well at the MCA coaching course over 900 staff have attended the ‘Introduction to Quality Improvement’ courses. The feedback from these courses has been excellent. They provide a short taster for staff that my want to go on and do the coaching course or get involved with a microsystem or flow team.

They encourage to deeply involve patients in their microsytem improvement, to help group members understand the value to the customer, drawing on tools including patient interviews and stories, patient representation in microsystems, and fictional patients. They hope to create a culture of sustained patient-centred continuous quality improvement within and beyond the Trust.

Sheffield Microsystem Coaching Academy – Introduction to Quality Improvement One Day Course

This course has now been approved by the Royal College for 5 hours of external non-clinical CPD points.

This course has been designed to give attendees a basic understanding of quality improvement theory and is aimed at developing healthcare leaders and microsystem members already involved in improvement work. Attendees will be expected to already have some awareness of the concept of microsystem improvement. Therefore, only those who are already involved in improvement work or about to commence working with a microsystem coach should apply for this course.

UCLPartners – Introduction to Quality Improvement
