Maria is a Consultant Pharmacist in Renal and Transplantation at the University Hospitals of Leicester. She has implemented innovative pharmacy services for renal patients such as pharmacy-led transplant, obstetric/renal, pre-transplant medication work-up and adherence clinics. She works with complex patient groups, promoting medicines optimisation and patient self-management. This includes her work with young adults with chronic kidney disease or a transplant and the renal/HIV population.
Maria obtained her Pharmacy degree in Spain and joined the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in 2003. She then completed a postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy and in 2007 conducted a research project in renal medicine, for which she was awarded a MSc in Clinical Pharmacy Research by Cardiff University. In 2009 she qualified as an independent prescriber. She has authored several publications and has been a speaker at numerous national conferences, including the UK Clinical Pharmacy Congress, British Renal Association, Renal Pharmacy Group and the Solid Organ Transplant Pharmacists Association. She became a member of the Renal Pharmacy Group Executive Committee in 2015, an organisation she has been a member of since 2007.
Maria is passionate about healthcare leadership, the role of clinical pharmacy and a strong advocate for people with kidney disease.
